24th April 2013

Two Springers today, both caught and released.  We had a 10lb hen fish caught on a 40g Silver Toby in the Tail of the Bridge Pool by Kenny Tragham and a splendid 23lb (estimated) cock fish caught in the Guay Pool by Mike Stanners.  The fish measured 43″ and was caught on a size 6 Cascade fished on an intermediate line (Picture to follow, hopefully without a “thumb”). Great to see the Sand Martins and Osprey today!

Monday – Another beautiful fish landed today Monday 8th April 2013 by Jamie Thompson, 8lb cock Salmon (Sea Licer), caught and released at the Neck of the Otterstone.  Jamie was fishing with a “sink tip” line and a size 6 Cascade, just like Saturday past, quite a few fishing showing in each of the pools.

Big Fish Today

Regular Dalguise angler Angus Carruthers from Largs on his first fishing trip of season hooked and successfully landed a magnificent 35lb Cock Spring Salmon.  This monster was caught on a 2.5 inch Yellow Belly Devon hooked in the Tail of Bridge pool.

It was an epic battle, starting with a huge run right across the pool followed by a leap, at which point Gus realised he was into a belter! The fish fought up and down the pool then decided to run upstream to the bridge, emptying Gus’s multiplier of line and snagging itself around a rock.  We managed to free the fish but the line had been almost shredded to destruction!

Several expert attempts to net the fish followed before he was duly landed, measured and photographed and released back into the river.  The fish was beautifully conditioned and measured 48 inches and a girth to match.

Gus’s previous Personal Best was 32lb, and to date, his fish is the largest recorded Salmon (Fishpal) so far this year in the whole of the UK.  Gus commented this is “what Tay Spring Salmon fishing is all about”.  I know that historically the third week in March is normally when the big Tay Springers make an appearance and I’m glad this one showed up on my doorstep.

23rd March 2013

Mr Peter Haggerty, a guest of Peter Shuttleworth, on his first ever visit to Dalguise landed a lovely 12lb cock fish in the Tail of Bridgepool on an 18g Silver Toby.  Well done Peter, just rewards for braving the blizzards and east winds, rod rings freezing up just to make it even harder!

It’s getting close to that time of the year, so I’m expecting to see the Osprey returns any day now.

Saturday 2nd March 2013

Fantastic conditions yesterday, Springers seen throughout the length of the beat.

Mark McGillivray had a hold of a fish estimated to be around 8lb in The Guay Pool on the fly but, alas, it didn’t stick.

Wednesday 27th February – Mike Stanners double

Two fish for Mike Stanners today, a beautiful 15lb hen fish this morning from the Guay Pool followed by an 8lb hen from the Tail of the Island in the afternoon.  Both fish fell to an 1.5″ gold bodied Willie Gunn aluminium tube fly, fished on an intermediate line, both fish were safely returned.

Dalguise is at an excellent height just now, about 8″ on the gauge, so all pools are fishing well

Kenny Tragham caught a Fantastic 13lb Spring Salmon, on Thursday 14th February 2013.

Kenny Tragham, Dalguise Syndicate regular, caught his 13lb Spring Salmon in The Bridge Pool,

whilst spinning with a 40g Silver Toby.

Kenny landed his Salmon with the assistance of Sandy Fairfoul,

which was then safely returned.

Well done on your first catch of the season.

Saturday 2nd February 2013. Two Springers landed. Ryan MacGregor & Colin Henderson.

19 year old Ryan MacGregor from Arbroath landed his first ever Salmon. on Saturday 2nd February 2013.

Ryan caught his 9lb Hen Salmon whilst harling the Guay Pool with a pink/pearl Tomic, which was safely returned.

Well done on your first Salmon Ryan, may it be the first of many.

Colin Henderson, Dalguise regular, caught his first Salmon of the season in The Otterstone Pool.

Colin was spinning from the bank with a brown/gold Devon Minnow.

He landed a 7lb Hen Salmon, and then returned safely to the river.
